What is Riyadh metro?

Riyadh Metro is a rapid transit system in the capital city of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Designed according to the latest international standards, it has a driverless operating system and central control room.

How many lines does Riyadh metro have?

Riyadh Metro is composed of 6 lines:
Blue, Red, Orange, Yellow, Green and Purple lines.
It has a total of 84 stations covering a length of 176 kilometers.

What are the different carriage classifications on the train?

Single Class, Family Class, and First Class.

What is the Family class cabin?

A male passenger travelling with his wife and children, or his female relative can use this cabin, female passengers can also use this cabin.

What is the First-class cabin?

The First-Class carriage offers more comfortable seats with more legroom. This carriage is usually less crowded. However, the cost of travelling would be more than the two other carriages.

What is the Single class cabin?

Male passengers who do not have any female or child passengers with them will use the single class.

Is there a staff on board that can assist me while travelling on the train?

Our Train Ambassadors will be happy to assist you with your inquiries and other concerns while on the train.

Will my tickets be checked while onboard?

Yes, your tickets may be checked by roaming ticket Revenue inspectors.

Can I bring luggage on board the train?

Passengers are only allowed to carry luggage that is within the carry-on-size limit.

What is the park & ride facility?

A specially selected area where passengers can conveniently park their cars and continue their journey on the metro system.

Which stations offer the park and ride facility?

Park and Ride Facilities are located across Lines 1, 2, 3 and 4 & 6. Line 5, being an all-deep underground station layout, has no Park & Ride facility.

Is parking free at the park and ride?

No. The tariff will be based on the fare scheme approved by Royal Commission for Riyadh City (RCRC).

How are the trains in Riyadh metro projects operated?

All the trains in Riyadh metro project are operated by electricity using 750 DC current.

What does it UTO mean?

Unattended Train Operation, where trains operated fully automatically, without drivers to open and close the doors or drive the train.

On radio what does 'CODE Mike' mean?

It means that the caller needs medical assistance in his location. It is used by FLOW staff while cascading critical information in such a way that it does not alarm, panic, or alert passengers or the public.

What is CBTC?

(Communications Based Train Control) is a railway signaling system that uses telecommunications between the train and track equipment for traffic management and infrastructure control.

Line 3 runs in the southern part of Riyadh connecting the Eastern to Western sides of Riyadh City along Al- Madinah Al-Munawara and Prince Saad bin Abdulrahman Al-Awal Roads,

(Line 3) is the longest line in Riyadh Metro Project.

consists of 27.3 Kms running on elevated viaducts (bridges),

Where can I purchase train tickets / passes?

Train Tickets/passes (DARB card) are initially available for purchase at TVS and TVMs inside Riyadh Metro Stations and at the TVMs at designated Bus Stations.

What are the operating hours of Riyadh metro?

Riyadh Metro is open to the public seven days a week from 06:00H to 00:00H.

What is the wait time for the arrival of trains?

Approximately, 3-5 minutes peak hours and 8-10 minutes during non-peak hours.

What time is the first train?

The first train timing varies from one station to another as the first train departs the terminal station at 06:00H and reaches each station at a different time. It is always best to coordinate with the staff on the station you would use.

What time is the last train?

The last train timing varies from one station to another as the last train departs from the terminal station and reaches each station at a different time. It is always best to coordinate with the staff on the station that you would use.

What is the wait time for the arrival of trains?

Specific time arrival of the trains can be seen through the Public Information Displays. Approximately, 3-5 minutes during peak hours and 8-10 minutes during off-peak hours.

How often do the trains run?

Trains run every 3 minutes during rush hour. At other times, trains usually run every 5-7 minutes.

What are the types of tickets used to access Riyadh metro?

passenger has 3 options to access the Riyadh Metro:

  1. DARB – is the official name of the contactless smart card of Riyadh Metro.
  2. QR code – to be downloaded onto a smart phone.
  3. EMV – Europay, Mastercard and Visa.

What is the DARB card?

DARB is the contactless smart card (CSC) that enables one to pay for the use of Riyadh Metro.

Where can I purchase a DARB card?

DARB cards are initially available for purchase at TVS and TVMs inside Riyadh Metro Stations, and at the TVMs at designated Riyadh Bus stations.

Where can I recharge my DARB card?

DARB cards can be recharged at TVMs and TVS inside Riyadh, TVMs at designated bus stops and online through the Riyadh Metro website.

What methods of payment in purchasing / recharging a DARB card?

Accepted payments are cash in local currency (Saudi Riyals), credit and debit cards, and e-purse.

How do you check in a DARB card?

Load your DARB card with at least the minimum balance. Tap your card at the card reader of the automatic gates of the metro. Wait for the gates to open and pass through the gate.

How do you check out a DARB card?

Upon alighting from the train, tap your card at the card reader of the automatic gates from the paid area. Once the flap of the automatic gate opens, pass through the gate.

Can I use my DARB card on Riyadh Public Bus also?

Yes, the DARB card can be used both on trains and buses.

How do you check in using the QR code on your mobile phone?

load the QR code on your mobile phone with at least the minimum balance. Tap the QR code on your mobile phone at the QR code reader of the automatic gates of the metro. Wait for the gates to open and pass through the gate.

How do you check in using your EMV CARD?

An EMV card is your normal debit or credit card that acts as a DARB card. You can check in using your EMV card in the same manner as you use your DARB card. The charge for the trip is deducted directly from your bank provider.

You can check out using your EMV card in the same manner as you would with DARB. Upon alighting from the train, tap your card at the card reader from the paid area. Once the flaps of the automatic gates open, pass through the gate.

Where can I purchase metro travel card?

DARB cards are initially available for purchase at TVS and TVMs inside Riyadh Metro Stations, and at the TVMs at designated Riyadh Bus stations.

How do I check my metro travel card balance?

A passenger can ask the Station Agent to read the DARB card via TVS / ATVS card reader using the READ CARD option.

A passenger can also check his card balance using the Smart TVM by placing his DARB card near the contactless card reader and selecting the “check” option.

Can I let someone use my metro travel card?

A passenger can allow the use of the anonymous DARB card. Anonymous CSCs have no information about the cardholder, neither printed nor stored electronically.

However, personalized DARB cards should be used by the owner. Personalized CSCs have previously registered in the system with the cardholder data. Personal information is stored electronically on the card, and it will physically print on the card´s surface.

How can I replace a damaged metro travel card?

DARB cards can be purchased from the Station Ticket Office or via Ticket Vending Machines.

What shall I do if I have a problem with a ticket vending machine?

If you have concerns, questions or would like to give feedback you can speak directly to one of our helpful members of staff on duty or contact us via the Customer Care Centre. Also, you can use the Yellow Help Button on the Ticket Vending Machine – which connects to the CCC.

Are pets allowed inside metro stations?

Only mobility assistance animals are allowed to accompany passengers to assist persons with a disability.

Can I bring food and beverages aboard the trains?

Eating, drinking, and smoking are prohibited on all trains.

What should I do if I lose an item inside the station or train?

You can approach any member of staff for assistance. If your item is not at the station staff will provide you with the contact details for our Customer Contact Centre to assist you with your issue.

How long are lost and found items kept at the station?

  • Perishable items are kept until the end of the business day.
  • For non-perishable low-value items are kept for 24 hours in the station on weekdays and 72 hours on weekends.
  • Non-perishable high-value items are stored for 7 days.
  • Unclaimed high-value articles beyond the stipulated time will be transferred to a central storage facility and stored for 60 days or until claimed.

What are the prohibited items inside the metro?

Carrying or using materials or equipment that could lead to inconvenience of other passengers or pose a threat to their safety is violation number 23 of the Ticket Inspection and Issue Fines.

Do you have restaurants/coffee shops inside the metro stations?

Yes, there will be retail shops at the stations.

Are there any rules regarding noise levels on the train?

Passengers travelling onboard the metro network shall always respect the acceptable noise level and avoid loud shouting or screaming. Any unacceptable noisy behaviors will be reported.

Is Riyadh metro safe?

Riyadh is one of the safest cities in the world, Riyadh metro passengers will be safe in all metro areas. All stations are monitored by CCTV and attended by Metro staff. Also, Police offices are distributed around the Metro network.

While inside the train I noticed some electrical panels or wiring cables that were exposed to passengers or unlocked, what should I do?

Please do not attempt to handle the situation by yourself. Immediately warn the Train ambassador or station staff. You may also call a help point inside the train to reach a metro operator.

Can people with no tickets visit and see the Metro stations?

Yes! Everyone is welcome to visit Riyadh Metro stations and use the retail facilities, regardless of whether they are travelling on trains. However, some services and facilities are located in the paid areas so visitors wishing to access must have DARB card access or train ticket.

What are the benefits of the Metro?

Metro is going to have a lot of benefits which will have a positive impact in Riyadh.

I’m a wheelchair user – will I be able to travel on the metro?

Yes, all trains have special space for the wheelchair, The stations have semi-even floors with the trains. Three dedicated wheelchair lots exist on each class of the train (one in family class, one in single class and one in first class). Please use the support arm handle once your wheelchair is stationed in the marked location. Elevators are also available up to street level. Please contact station staff for any assistance during your trip.

Why do some Train cars feel hot in the summer or cold in the winter?

Metro trains have cooling and heating equipment, but it may feel warmer or colder on a rail car when the train doors open and close at stations, allowing cool or warm air to escape. Air conditioning units or heaters aboard the train cars also might be broken. Passengers are urged to note the car number and report the problem to Train Ambassadors or Station Staff.

What should I do if I observe something unusual or suspicious, such as a suspicious package?

Report any unattended items or suspicious behavior immediately to train Ambassadors or Station Staff or to Operator by using the help points at the stations or trains.
If you feel it is an emergency, call 911.

Who can I call for assistance and help?

For assistance inside the station, you may call any available Station Staff – Station Ambassador, Station Agent or Station Supervisor.
When inside the train, you can ask assistance from the Train Ambassador

Passengers who wish to make complaints can do so through multiple channels, including:
– at stations
– online and social media
– Riyadh Public Transport Network (RPTN) Call Centre.

I am travelling with my kids. What would I do if I left one of them behind in the station?

Approach any of the Station Staff and inform them about the details – name, age, gender of the child and what the child looks like. Then give your name and contact number to the station staff.

I am travelling with a package/luggage. What would I do if I left one of them behind in the station?

Approach any of the station staff to report your lost item and give them details such as the description of the lost item, time and date it was lost, and the location where you last left it. All low value items shall be kept in the identified secure room. While high valued items will be stored in Safety Deposit Rooms. At the end of 30 days, the low valued articles will be disposed of while the high valued items will be handed over to authorities.

Are there any restrictions on smoking or vaping on the train?

Smoking is not allowed inside the metro network. All smoking devices are prohibited including Electronic and non-electronic smoking.

Who can I call for assistance and help?

You can refer to one of our Station Ambassadors in the stations who will gladly assist you.

Riyadh Metro operates under Unattended Train Operation (UTO) mode. It can run driverless. However, we have standby Train Ambassadors who are competent in driving the train in case there is a need to.

What facilities do you have on the trains?

Riyadh Metro trains have 2 cars and 3 classes – First Class, Family Class and Single Individual Class. It features smoke detectors, exterior crew switches, interior crew switch, door isolation switch, emergency access device, emergency egress device door visual warning light.

How do I find the quickest route to my destination?

Each station has a Riyadh Metro Map available in the stations. Additionally, Station Agents and Station Ambassadors are visually available to assist passenger queries.

Is it possible to use mobile devices on the underground sections of the Riyadh Metro?

Yes, it is possible GSM repeaters and leaky cables have been installed throughout the tunnel section.

Which station(s) is/are integrated with the Bus Network?

Both the metro and bus project are inter-connected through the RPTCC. (Riyadh Public Transport Control Center)

Where can I find Riyadh Metro information in real time?

Platform Information System.

How are real-time departure and arrival times displayed?

They are displayed via the Platform Information System which the passengers can see at the concourse unpaid and platform areas.

Is it convenient to ride in the Riyadh Metro compared to driving my own car?

Yes. Riyadh Metro has 85 stations strategically located and covering most of the densely populated areas, public facilities and the educational commercial and medical institutions.

Is it safe riding the Riyadh Metro?

Yes. The Station Supervisor conducts station inspection at least once in their shift. While the Security Staff conducts regular station inspections as well.

The Station Staff are all trained in evacuating the station in case of emergency.

Does the Riyadh Metro have a Central Station where all stations intersect/meet?

No, however the entire network is connected through Interchange stations.

    Yes, all trains have special space for the wheelchair, The stations have semi-even floors with the trains. Three dedicated wheelchair lots exist on each class of the train (one in family class, one in single class and one in first class). Please use the support arm handle once your wheelchair is stationed in the marked location. Elevators are also available up to street level. Please contact station staff for any assistance during your trip.

    Why do some Train cars feel hot in the summer or cold in the winter?

    Metro trains have cooling and heating equipment, but it may feel warmer or colder on a rail car when the train doors open and close at stations, allowing cool or warm air to escape. Air conditioning units or heaters aboard the train cars also might be broken. Passengers are urged to note the car number and report the problem to Train Ambassadors or Station Staff.

    What should I do if I observe something unusual or suspicious, such as a suspicious package?

    Report any unattended items or suspicious behavior immediately to train Ambassadors or Station Staff or to Operator by using the help points at the stations or trains.
    If you feel it is an emergency, call 911.

    • For non-perishable low-value items are kept for 24 hours in the station on weekdays and 72 hours on weekends.
    • Non-perishable high-value items are stored for 7 days.
    • Unclaimed high-value articles beyond the stipulated time will be transferred to a central storage facility and stored for 60 days or until claimed.

    Carrying or using materials or equipment that could lead to inconvenience of other passengers or pose a threat to their safety is violation number 23 of the Ticket Inspection and Issue Fines.

    Are there any rules regarding noise levels on the train?

    Passengers travelling onboard the metro network shall always respect the acceptable noise level and avoid loud shouting or screaming. Any unacceptable noisy behaviors will be reported.

    Is Riyadh metro safe?

    Riyadh is one of the safest cities in the world, Riyadh metro passengers will be safe in all metro areas. All stations are monitored by CCTV and attended by Metro staff. Also, Police offices are distributed around the Metro network.

    While inside the train I noticed some electrical panels or wiring cables that were exposed to passengers or unlocked, what should I do?

    Please do not attempt to handle the situation by yourself. Immediately warn the Train ambassador or station staff. You may also call a help point inside the train to reach a metro operator.

    Yes! Everyone is welcome to visit Riyadh Metro stations and use the retail facilities, regardless of whether they are travelling on trains. However, some services and facilities are located in the paid areas so visitors wishing to access must have DARB card access or train ticket.

    I’m a wheelchair user – will I be able to travel on the metro?

    Yes, all trains have special space for the wheelchair, The stations have semi-even floors with the trains. Three dedicated wheelchair lots exist on each class of the train (one in family class, one in single class and one in first class). Please use the support arm handle once your wheelchair is stationed in the marked location. Elevators are also available up to street level. Please contact station staff for any assistance during your trip.

    Why do some Train cars feel hot in the summer or cold in the winter?

    Metro trains have cooling and heating equipment, but it may feel warmer or colder on a rail car when the train doors open and close at stations, allowing cool or warm air to escape. Air conditioning units or heaters aboard the train cars also might be broken. Passengers are urged to note the car number and report the problem to Train Ambassadors or Station Staff.

    What should I do if I observe something unusual or suspicious, such as a suspicious package?

    Report any unattended items or suspicious behavior immediately to train Ambassadors or Station Staff or to Operator by using the help points at the stations or trains.
    If you feel it is an emergency, call 911.

    Approach any of the station staff to report your lost item and give them details such as the description of the lost item, time and date it was lost, and the location where you last left it. All low value items shall be kept in the identified secure room. While high valued items will be stored in Safety Deposit Rooms. At the end of 30 days, the low valued articles will be disposed of while the high valued items will be handed over to authorities.

    Are there any restrictions on smoking or vaping on the train?

    Smoking is not allowed inside the metro network. All smoking devices are prohibited including Electronic and non-electronic smoking.

    Yes. Riyadh Metro has 85 stations strategically located and covering most of the densely populated areas, public facilities and the educational commercial and medical institutions.

    Is it safe riding the Riyadh Metro?

    Yes. The Station Supervisor conducts station inspection at least once in their shift. While the Security Staff conducts regular station inspections as well.

    The Station Staff are all trained in evacuating the station in case of emergency.
